Surveying Denmark

The Danish Geodata Agency is responsible for the national surveying with GPS and levelling. The surveying is the foundation for the national reference systems, which again is the foundation for national mapping and for the infrastructure for geographic information. For more information about national surveying with GPS, please go to GNSS Reference Stations, REFDK and 10 km net.

Levelling

The Danish Geodata Agency has conducted three country-wide levelling surveys. These took place during the periods 1885-1905, 1940-1953 and 1982-1994. The most recent survey is the foundation for the DVR90 height system that is currently being used in Denmark.

Precise measurements of heights can be critical with relation to coastal erosion, storm warnings and flood management. Therefore, The Danish Geodata Agency has developed a close working relationship with the Danish Meteorological Institute, the Danish Maritime Safety AdministrationThe Danish Coastal Authority and a number of ports and harbours in order to secure correct and precise height information in critical areas.

The Danish Geodata Agency has official responsibility for the management and maintenance of Denmark’s levelling network and for ensuring that heights above mean sea level is available to the country’s local authorities. This includes carrying out detailed trigonometric levelling surveys and subsequent updating of the DVR90 heights of the surveyed points. Such updates have been carried out in the majority of the country’s communes.
