The Infrastructure for SPatial InfoRmation in Europe (INSPIRE) directive will establish the groundwork for a geographical data collection that covers all EU territories.
Natural phenomena such as environment, agricultural, energy and transportation are common to all EU countries and transcend their national borders. The ability to share information about these can be critical.
Therefore, INSPIRE has laid the groundwork for the infrastructure that will support an EU-wide geographical database. The benefits of INSPIRE will include improved efficiency in collecting, storing and sharing geodata. The capacity to monitor cross-boundary EU policies, developments and emergency situations will also be greatly improved.
The target users of INSPIRE include policy-makers, planners, organisations and citizens at European, national and local levels.
INSPIRE in Denmark
The Danish Geodata Agency is responsible for implementation of the INSPIRE directive in Denmark.
A background paper on Denmark's readiness to engage in INSPIRE based on its existing spatial infrastructure was written in 2005 and can be downloaded here.
The INSPIRE website also provides general information about the directive as well as background papers for the other member, candidate and EFTA countries.
